The Arcanium - Introduction

Image
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Welcome writers to our site newsletter, The Arcanium! This newsletter will be
not only a place to capture news and other site happenings, but also a chance to
participate in different activities and join in some lighthearted competition!

There are numerous sections here in The Arcanium, however what you see here is
subject to future changes. If you have any ideas for a section you think we may
need to add, feel free to send me a message and title it "The Arcanium Suggestion"

The first section you will see following this one is "Meet The Staff." Here there will
be a little section from each staff member describing themselves and perhaps
including an extra fact or two aside from their normal introduction thread.

Following that is our "Updates". Here we will have the most recent list of changes
and other important information for members to keep in mind and keep track of.
We may also include some chances for feedback and some possible events on the
site here.

The next section in our newsletter is the "Writing Help" section. Here we will answer
common questions that are often asked to assist with future writing. There will always
be a section that includes at least one basic tip as well as some articles and other
assisting items.

The upcoming section is our "Activities". Every issue there will be a couple different
activities and writing fun to partake in. In the occasional issue we may put in a
small writing competition to keep things fresh and entertaining! Same as above, if
you have any ideas to add to this section, feel free to message me with the title:
"The Arcanium Suggestion."

Finally, the last section is "Other Information." This isn't a specified area so there
could be anything put here and it can change from volume to volume. On some
occasions, you may find "The writer's pedestal" where we will showcase a writer
and their creations, or you may find some more in-depth information about a
future site-wide competition. The opportunities are endless here so definitely keep
an eye out!

Luminary
Canine - Aye there. I'm Canine, one of the Founders and Luminaries Here on Forgotten Tomes. I am a tired Creative Writing major who spends a fair chunk of time dedicating energy to this lovely community which I now call my safe haven. However, when I'm not doing that, I'm crafting up or involved in a DnD campaign, playing video games, watching horror flicks or am taking a very long nap. I plan on being a published author in the near future and spend an insane amount of time trying to improve my writing; I've been roleplaying for almost ten years now and writing for far longer. Aside from all of that, I am living with my partner and two cats, and while my life tends to be more hectic than not, you're more than welcome to send me a PM for any reason—I will always answer!
───
Visceryl - Hi! I'm Visceryl, one of the site founders and Luminaries. I'm pretty quick to respond if I'm needed and my DMs are always open. He/him pronouns only. I am an avid horror fanatic, enjoy survival/horror games, and aspire to be a graphic designer. Foxes are my absolute favorite animal and I would 100% die for them.
───────────────────
Sentinel
darkness. - hello everyone! I'm darkness. and I'm your local sentinel here on FT! I'm a junior in college seeking a degree in psychology with a minor in social welfare and I absolutely love all things psych and the human mind. I also love to read and write (obviously). If you need anything please message me!
───────────────────
Regent
nicaise - hey guys! my name is nic and I am a university student in the united states operating currently under CST. my main interests are linguistics, film, and screenwriting ─ so feel free to message me if you also like any of those things. when I'm not spending all my free time on this site and still not getting much of anything done, I'm probably (thinking about) rowing, driving, or bothering my friends. I will be in Europe in the fall for study-abroad. I'll try my best to keep this little spot on the site updated as often as possible as my locations and situations change! as for my job on here, I'm basically one of the little people who helps the bigger people with coding + design when I can. if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or concerns specifically related to those things, please message me or one of said bigger people (the luminaries).
───────────────────
Magistrate
Gamora - Hi everyone! My name is Gamora, or Gam, and I'm a Magistrate here on the site! I've been roleplaying for several years now and it's one of my favorite things to do. In my personal life I am a full time admin professional and cat & dog Mom! I spend my free time writing, crying over fandoms, and training with my service dog, Ollie! My inbox is always open, so feel free to reach out anytime!
───────────────────
Chronicler
Mickey - Hello! I'm Mickey, your friendly local chronicler here on FT! I am the mother of a tiny human and a furry fuzzball people like to call a cat. It should also be known I obsess over mythology (namely Greek and Norse) So if you need a person to chat with about it, I am your lady! I am on this site to keep things cleaned up and attempt to come up with entertaining ideas to keep the site fun and exciting. My inbox is always open to questions, suggestions, and just to talk! I hope you all enjoy your time here on Forgotten Tomes and I hope your creativity flows!
───────────────────
Page
Savage Badger - Ahoy! I am Savage Badger, your local savage and the page of this page. I am a sportsman by choice, have been doing Judo for 12 years and now I am a passionate Jugger player. Also, history is me thing to nerd about, as well as some video games and Game of Thrones. If you have any questions, don't know where to go, or need any form of assistance, drop me a message. I am your first responder.
Happy writing!

The Arcanium - Writing Advice

Writer's Block
It is so easy to get stuck behind a wall when writing. The famed 'writer's block' has
plagued writers for ages and is one of the most daunting things to get past. On the
flip side however, there has been many a trick shared among writers to defeat this
menace. Here is a couple ideas that may assist with that next post that you just
can't quite complete.

Go for a walk, clear your mind and look for muse in the world around you
Listen to some music. It's a great way to get creativity flowing, it may even help to
do a music genre that matches what the theme of the story is. (I have personally
done this, and it really does help!)
Create a routine, giving yourself a routine to follow can help keep muse flowing
when you need it. A lot of famous authors follow this.
Step away. Go do something else for a short bit. Sometimes changing what you
are doing can jump your creativity into gear.
Read some quotes or prompts. Sometimes seeing another's basic idea or having
something to work from can jump-start the 'creative juices'.
If you're stuck writing about something specific, try writing something else. This is
a wonderful tip! Either stepping back and working on another project (be it a prompt,
something for another character, or a different kind of writing such as poetry) or adjusting
your wording can be a wonderful help. (Thank you, Gamora!)

Have any ideas? Feel free to put your ideas here below!

The Arcanium - Activities

Image
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────
To start, we should go over some of the content that could be found in this area
and how to do each of these. You can respond to any of these things here in the
actual issue!

Member interview - There will be a list of questions for you as the member to
respond to and put your thoughts in! This could vary from extremely deep and
thought provoking ideas to simple things such as 'what's your favorite color?'.

Character Interview - Very similar to your member interview, however this will be
done as if one of your character(s) is responding to the questions!

Character creation ideas - We will put in some ideas and some helpful resources
to assist with character creation since that can be difficult at times. On occasion,
there may be an activity where a faceclaim or idea is put in place and it's up to
you to create a character from that idea.

These are the main three as of now for ideas however we are working diligently to
come up with some other ideas to keep this changing and exciting! If you have any
ideas, feel free to message me!
───
THIS MONTH IN HISTORY: June 14, 1951 American writer Harriet Beecher Stowe
(1811-1896) was born in Litchfield, Connecticut. She wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin, an
anti-slavery novel containing vivid descriptions of the sufferings and oppression
of African Americans. The book provoked a storm of protest and inflamed people
in the North against slavery in the South. The names of two characters from the
novel have become part of the English language - the slave, Uncle Tom, and the
villainous slave owner, Simon Legree. During the Civil War, as Harriet Beecher Stowe
was introduced to President Abraham Lincoln, he reportedly said, "So you're the
little woman who wrote the book that made this great war."
───
CHARACTER CREATION - A personal favorite thing to do when creating a character
is finding their 'aesthetic'. An aesthetic is defined as the pleasant or beautiful
appearance of a person, place, or thing. Usually people will create a collage of
images or perhaps find a 'theme song' for a character to begin creating them. So
my challenge to you is;

Create a character who's theme song is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.

Member Interview

    • 1. Who is your hero? Admittedly I have a few people who made a large impact on my life, but one person that made a huge impact on my life was a hockey player from my local junior hockey team. Back when I was in junior high and very mentally sick and struggling, I reached out to him, and he helped me. He was like a big brother to me and was always there to answer a message if I needed him. Sometimes I read through our old conversations as a reminder of what I've fought for and what I keep fighting for. Fast forward many years later, and he''s still there if I need to reach out to him. We are both in different places in life now than we were back then, but he's always there for me. Luca is my hero, and always will be.
      2. If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Maybe another province in Canada, but definitely not outside this country. I'd love to give BC a try, but tbh I really love NS. Maybe I'd move to Cape Breton though.
      3. What is your biggest fear? I have a lot of fears, but the biggest struggle right now is intimacy. It's a really difficult thing for me to experience, even just hugging someone like a friend. Honestly my best friend Autumn and my close cousins, uncles, and aunts are the only people I can actually willingly hug without freezing or feeling uncomfortable.
      4. Would you rather vacation in Hawaii or Alaska, and why? Hawaii, only because I have always wanted to go there. I'd probably die though since I can't handle the heat lol.
      5. What would you change about yourself if you could? Not being disabled. It really sucks, and don't really feel like I need to elaborate more on that as it pretty much speaks for itself. As something for a personal growth, I'd like to stop being so judgmental to those close to me and just let people do what they want.
      6. What really makes you angry? The state of the world right now.
      7. What motivates you to work hard? The future, I guess. I want to graduate my training program with Ollie, then pass the certification test, and buy a house within the next three or four years. So that motivates me right now.
      8. If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? It depends on the week. I go through phases with foods where I eat sooo much of one thing for a few weeks then get sick of it. Cravings wise, I'd say nachos. Realistically, probably sushi? Since there are so many options.
      9. Who is your favorite author? I don't have one specific favorite Author so I'll probably say John Green I guess. Or Stephen Chbosky simply because he wrote my favorite book ever, Perks of Being a Wallflower. And the classic Stephanie Myers, Suzanne Collins, and JK Rowling. Honestly I have no idea so there are some options xD
      10. What is your proudest accomplishment? When my boss told me "we were nervous hiring you at first because of your age, but you have exceeded our expectations by a land slide" I straight up almost cried. Also the fact I will have my debt paid off in like...thirty days has me wilding.
      11. Do you like or dislike surprises? Why or why not? I dislike them because I hate attention. But I appreciate any I receive.
      12. What is your favorite book to read? Perks of Being a Wallflower is my favorite book but tbh I don't read anymore lol
      13. What makes you laugh the most? Absolute stupid shit. Like tiktoks and crass humor. And when my best friend and I are on crackhead energy. But also the uber scene with the lesbian porn from Book Smart, the movie I think its a book???, has me rolling every single time I watch it I don't know why.
      14. What was the last movie you went to? What did you think? I immediately was about to say Endgame but that's not true lol. I think it was either Joker or Zombieland 2. I don't know which one came out last.
      15. What did you want to be when you were small? A vet or equine masseuse.
      16. If you could share a meal with any 4 individuals, living or dead, who would they be? Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, Eliza Taylor, and my Nanny. Easy answer lol.
      17. If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be? Spend a day at the barn riding horses.
      18. What is your favorite game/video game or sport to watch and play? Favorite video game is The Last of Us and favorite sport to watch is equestrian sports and hockey.
      19. Would you rather ride a bike, ride a horse, or drive a car? Ride a horse, obviously.
      20. What would you sing at Karaoke night? Tequila :)

Re: Vol. I) - The Arcanium

1. Who is your hero?
I'd say that I am my own hero, but this is a lie. I honestly have no idea. But if I really had to point out somebody it would be my former team captain. He is a great person, inspiring and extremely caring. I love him like a father.
2. If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
Scandinavia, no matter if Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway. I think I would prefer Sweden because I already have some friends there, but seriously I would not like to stay in Germany.
3. What is your biggest fear?
I prefer not to answer but it's not spiders
4. Would you rather vacation in Hawaii or Alaska, and why?
That's an interesting question. I mean both locations are beautiful and I would certainly like to visit both one day. However, I think I would go for Alaska first. I always have been more of a snow and cold person when it comes to travel.
5. What would you change about yourself if you could?
My bad back for sure. It bothers me so much that I don't wear the clothes I want to wear, don't go swimming anymore and things like that. I guess if my back was healthy I would have a lot more self-confidence.
6. What really makes you angry?
Young people that are overly conservative.

Like my sister who thinks that LGBT+ people should not be allowed to marry, adopt kids etc. she is my age.

Oh, and my flatmate who doesn't clean up after herself....
7. What motivates you to work hard?
Self-Doubt. It sounds crazy, but I always think that whatever I will do it won't be good enough, so I work harder and harder and harder. Of course, I am never satisfied but I produce acceptable results 90% of the time.
8. If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Ugh, if I really had to choose I think it would be something that features a lot of different things. On the other hand who would not like pasta bolognese every day?
9. Who is your favorite author?
I think I will go with Andrzej Sapkowski, I mean the Witcher Series is dope
10. What is your proudest accomplishment?
I don't really have one honestly. Everything I 'accomplished' so far isn't really worth anything, so I am not particularly proud of anything I have done so far.
11. Do you like or dislike surprises? Why or why not?
I dislike them because I don't know what is coming. As simple as that
12. What is your favorite book to read?
I hardly re-read books, but I guess that "Die 13-Einhalb Leben des Käpt'n Blaubär" would be my book of choice.
13. What makes you laugh the most?
My own miserable life. Just kidding. Joking around with my friends I guess. I re-watched Game or Thrones with a friend yesterday, and we really had a good laugh
14. What was the last movie you went to? What did you think?
Oof, good question. I think it was Känguru Chroniken and it was... mediocre to say the least. You had to read the books beforehand to have fun and the storyline was a it plain, but otherwise it was a good family movie.
15. What did you want to be when you were small?
Soldier. There was no other option back these days until I found out that the German and Polish army are not exactly the safest nor the friendliest places to be.
16. If you could share a meal with any 4 individuals, living or dead, who would they be?
Witold Pilecki for sure, Otto von Bismarck or Wilhelm II, The Queen maybe, because who can fancy themselves to have eaten dinner with the queen? And my granny because I regret not having spent more time with her before she died.
17. If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be?
Don't worry.
18. What is your favorite game/video game or sport to watch and play?
My favourite sport to play is Jugger for sure. It is action packed and lots of fun honestly. Video Games? I guess Borderlands. I thought about Skyrim but after my 666th playthrough it honestly gets boring. As for watching sports? Biathlon and Ski Jumping. I used to watch Ice Hockey and Volleyball a lot but I kinda lost track (shame on me)
19. Would you rather ride a bike, ride a horse, or drive a car?
I don't have a driver's licence. I don't know how to ride a horse. My only option is the bike, and I guess that's what I like to do the most honestly.
20. What would you sing at Karaoke night?
Castle on the Hill by Ed Sheeran for sure.
